Is this the most expensive CPC on Google Ads?
Probably not but it’s hard to see how this would work for a B2B lead generation campaign. For those that are curious, this is for a keyword associated with VMware, which is a network functions virtualization platform. In simpler terms, it plays a big role in cloud computing. I work with a large number of cyber security clients and while doing research for B2B lead generation campaigns came across this keywords cost per click (CPC) estimate on Google’s Keyword Tool. Of course this is just an estimate and this is to get top position for that keyword so I’m sure clicks can be had for a lot less than that if you don’t mind being a little further down the page.
From a B2B lead generation perspective, let’s see how we can make this work.
$700 CPC, 5% conversion rate, $14,000 cost per lead. Seems doable – ha!
Obviously this is one of the issues we run into all the time with our clients. Targeting just the bottom of the marketing funnel, rather than engaging your prospects further up the marketing funnel, where your costs per click are lower. Reaching customers that are at the top (awareness stage) or middle (consideration stage) of the marketing funnel means you can build trust and hopefully reach out to your prospects via email rather than just paid search. So, is this the most expensive CPC on Google Ads?
It turns out, no, this is not the most expensive cost per click on Google Ads. HubSpot reports that, first off, it’s hard to determine the most expensive CPC on Google Ads because the platform is so fluid and do to the sheer volume of data. HubSpot found the most expensive cpc on Google Ads was for “Houston Maritime Attorney” which came in at $1090 CPC.

Based on the CPC for Maritime Attorneys, the CPC for my VMware associated keyword looks like a bargain!
